INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SMALL BUSINESSES, BANKS, FINANCE, INNOVATION AND GROWTH
12-13 October 2017 — Department of Economics, Society, and Politics - Università di Urbino Carlo Bo, ItalyCall for Papers
The Department of Economics, Society, and Politics (DESP) of the Università di Urbino Carlo Bo welcomes paper submission at the International Conference on Small Businesses, Banks, Finance, Innovation and Growth to be held in Urbino on 12-13 October 2017.
The event will be sponsored by the Banca Popolare di Ancona – UBI Banca.
This conference is a sequel to previous Urbino conferences that highlighted the importance of issues related to small businesses such as innovation, access to financing, and policies in the aftermath of the crisis.
The Great Recession dramatically changed the business environment in which firms operate, and countries’ ability to deal with the crisis depends to a large extent on the degrees of freedom available to them to effectively manage their fiscal and monetary policies. Structural policies can also play a positive role. Among the latter, policies that facilitate firm entry and the increase in firm size are important in order to exploit growth opportunities and better overcome economic recessions. The economic potential of countries is connected to sound and well-organized firms that rely on more innovation, a better-educated labor force, higher likelihood of access to financial resources and efficient investments. In turn, national governments and international institutions should adopt policies and incentives that encourage firm aggregation, more competitive financial markets, more R&D investments, less regulated labor markets and a reform of national education systems.
Invited speakers are Larry Chavis (University of North Carolina ─ Chapel Hill), Annalisa Ferrando (European Investment Bank), Giorgia Maffini (OECD), Sushanta Mallick (Queen Mary University of London), Salvatore Zecchini (OECD, UN Economic Commission for Europe).
The organizers and scientific committee of the Conference are pleased to extend an invitation to submit competitively reviewed abstracts that aim to explore questions related to small businesses, such as:
- the financing strategies for traditional and innovative SMEs
- the role of bank financing for innovative SMEs
- the importance of financial and fiscal disciplines for SMEs
- the role of institutions in shaping appropriate policies for SMEs
- the role of long-term policies to foster SME competitiveness
The organizers welcome theoretical and empirical papers focused on the role of SMEs in the new economic environment modelled by the Great Recession. Papers related to policies in favor of SMEs in Europe and the U.S. are also of particular interest.
